Their leaf-like appearance helps them remain undetected by predators and allows them to ambush prey effectively. Pretty remarkable. Female leaf mantises are known for cannibalistic behavior, sometimes consuming their mates after or even during mating. This fact may score a heart or not. Protected as a UNESCO Global Geopark, Rainbow Mountain sits in the foothills of the Qilian Mountains and was shaped by millions of years of geology. Layered sandstone and minerals create the color: reds from iron oxide; blues, greens, yellows from other minerals. Often compared to Peru’s Rainbow Mountain, China’s version stands out for its vast scale and intense color bands. Board buses or walk the entire park where boardwalks, paved paths, stairs, and a few significantly steep climbs reach the four main viewing platforms. Their striking red turbans, a symbol of energy, courage, and life in their culture, also serve a practical purpose. These nomads, who brave the harsh sun and desert conditions of Rajasthan, use their turbans as a shield, making them a perfect blend of tradition and necessity. Women are renowned for their elaborate jewelry–heavy silver necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, nose rings, and bangles—and their art and embroidery skills. They tuck their bright feet and sides under their bodies at rest during the day, revealing only their green backs, which blend in with the surrounding foliage. I’m here with @jvophotosafaris and bear biologist Gary Alt, traveling through Frederick Sound and the spectacular wilderness waterways of the Inside Passage. This area is not only the summer feeding grounds for more than 500 humpback whales but also home to numerous other natural attractions, including humongous coastal brown bears. Fun fact: Coastal brown bears are generally larger than grizzlies. This size difference is primarily due to their richer, more abundant food sources, such as salmon and other marine life. These high-calorie diets allow coastal brown bears to grow larger and heavier than grizzly bears, which have a more varied and often less calorie-dense diet. Adult male coastal brown bears can weigh between 900 and 1,500 pounds, whereas adult male grizzly bears typically weigh between 400 and 800 pounds. The richer food resources along the coast contribute significantly to this disparity in size. While it’s not yet officially salmon season for a few weeks, when one would find a greater density of bears, today’s land excursion gave us an amazing bear experience in an area where these animals aren’t as habituated as in my other Alaskan brown bear trip a few years ago. A mother bear (sow) and her curious cub emerged from the woods just feet from where we were sitting on the beach, photographing another adult bear about a half mile away with our long lenses. No long lens was required for this up-close, personal pass! Our first sightings/perfectly positioned as they were/would be the last images taken on this week-long Stanford Travel/Study Program. We tracked this one to a termite mound—an ideal lookout for spotting prey and watching for predators. Our first stars of the morning? Crested Caracaras. They may look hawk-like, but they’re actually part of the falcon family. And their behavior is a marvelous mix: like vultures — they scavenge like hawks — they guard from high posts like crows — clever, curious, and wildly opportunistic Caracaras solve problems, manipulate objects, learn human patterns, and show an intelligence on par with crows and ravens. What a difference a day makes. Today we found them—the most cold-tolerant primates on Earth. Photographing the endangered blue-faced (golden snub-nosed) monkeys in the wild was nothing short of extraordinary. Their luxurious coats act like down parkas, glowing even more vividly in the cold. The striking blue skin around their eyes comes from visible blood vessels beneath unpigmented skin, and that flat snub nose? A brilliant adaptation for breathing icy mountain air without freezing.
